Document - Manuscript, Robin Boyd, Why I love Melbourne, 1969
Boyd muses over Melbourne and its "schizophrenic or split-urbanity", exploring the contrasts that make its character. Poses question "Why don't I live in Sydney?", weighing the "humility" of Melbourne versus the arrogance of Sydney. Every creative movement of importance in Australia in the twentieth century had its origins in Melbourne, therefore Melbourne, Boyd argues, is the moral capital of Australia.Original manuscript of an article published in "The Australian", 04.03.1969. This is the first of a series of three articles about Melbourne published on consecutive days (see D023 and D024).Typewritten carbon copy, quarto, 8 pagesPencil annotationsmelbourne, collins street, alexandra avenue, george miles, boomerang, robin boyd, manuscript -

Extols the virtues of Waikiki as a holiday destination/escape machine, the less-than-Good Taste of the resort combined with its virtues/religious dogma of American middle-class vacation standards. Boyd describes a day of the typical young American hotel occupant, and Honolulu's uniform air of confidence attracting American tourists. This manuscript was published in 'The Sunday Australian' with the title ‘Why I love Waikiki’ on 23/05/1971.Original manuscript of ‘Why I love Waikiki’ published in 'The Sunday Australian', 23/05/1971.Typewritten (1 c copy and 1 p/copy), pencil edits, quarto, 11 pagesSent 12 May 71 - in pencil on front pagewaikiki, honolulu, american tourism, second rate californian architecture, american middle-class vacation standards, robin boyd, manuscript, ohm2022, ohm2022_16 -

Functional object - Appliance, "Semak" Vitamiser
The Boyds brought this vitamiser from their Camberwell home. Mandie Boyd, Robin and Patricia's eldest daughter, has very vivid memories of this gadget. "It made everything from milkshakes for us to mayonnaise, stuffing for chicken, soups, but especially I remember Robin in the kitchen using it to make daiquiris, endless ice, rum and lemon juice crushed and blended in the good old Vitamiser. He was wearing an amazing pale grey suit. American fabric beautifully cut, must have been synthetic, and had flecks of a darker grey through it, sounds hideous and was “of the time”. His American cotton business shirts were also beautifully tailored, with loads of room to move your arms unlike the daggy Aussie shirts." "Semak" Vitamiser, with a white plastic base, with 'on/off' switch at front of base. 4 black holders. Glass jug with black plastic lid. Black power cord. 3 black rubber stoppers at base.SN 7-81. 50 CYCLE 240v 120Wcookware, walsh st appliances, robin boyd -

Functional object - Appliance
Mandie Boyd, Robin and Patricia's eldest daughter, has very vivid memories of this meat mincer, her favorite gadget. "Every Sunday until I was about 12 (mid-1950s), there would be roast lamb with all the trimmings, good homemade mint sauce, roast potato and pumpkin, parsnip, tomato and onion pie with breadcrumb topping, fresh green peas and gravy. Monday night was Shepherd’s Pie, and I looked forward to it. The cold meat was cut up and fed through the mincing machine fastened to the table at Riversdale Rd. I don't remember it ever coming out at Walsh Street. Maybe Patricia was over cold roast lamb at that stage. I loved turning the handle and watching the meat squidge out, could hardly call it mince, some onion and lastly a slice of bread to push the bits through. Then the mincer all came apart, was washed and put away until next Monday. The meat and onion tossed with leftover gravy, mash on top, loads of butter, etched with a fork tine and baked in the oven. Served with tomato sauce, very good." A beige coloured, heavy meat mincer. Detachable (discs 2) and outer cover for mincing. Long handle with wood end. Small black rubber stoppers underneath.cookware, gadget, walsh st appliances, walsh st kitchenware, robin boyd, ohm2022, ohm2022_11 -
